Best Selective Soldering Machine & Selective Soldering Process

Best Selective Soldering Machine & Selective Soldering Process.

Selective Soldering is a Technique of Selectively Soldering Electronic Components on the PCB that is Partially Assembled.

Selected components are automatically soldered on to the PCB as per the pre-programmed program. One just has to feed the machine with a program and the jobs is done automatically.

A Laser Selective Soldering Machine

Selective Soldering Process

Process used in Selective Soldering Depends on the Type of Machine been used. Following are the Processes used in order of preferences:

1. Miniature Wave Selective Soldering Process

In this process, a Benchtop / Tabletop Small Mini Wave Soldering Machine is used to pump miniature solder wave. The Wave Solder Pot can be Fixed and the PCB can the moved over the wave to solder selectively. Or, the PCB can be fixed and the Wave Solder Pot can be moved underneath.

2. Laser Selective Soldering Process

This technology uses a laser (Generally Diode Laser) to directly solder any joint on the board. It is a very successful and cost-effective technology and process.

3. Selective Aperture Wave Soldering Process

In this process, previously soldered areas on the PCB are covered with Peelable Solder Mask. The Exposed Areas of the PCB is moved over Wave Soldering Machine to complete the process.

Other Less-Common Selective Soldering Processes

  1. Using Programmable Robotic Soldering Iron with solder wire feeder.
  2. Induction Soldering with Solder Paste or Solder Preforms and Hot Gas.

FAQs: Selective Soldering PCB Assembly

Selective soldering employs a soldering machine equipped with a soldering nozzle or jet. The machine accurately heats the targeted solder joints using focused heat, melting the solder and forming reliable connections. This process is controlled and programmable, ensuring precision and consistency.

Selective soldering offers several benefits, including:

  • Precision: It allows precise soldering of small, complex, or heat-sensitive components, reducing the risk of damage.
  • Reduced Flux and Solder Usage: Selective soldering uses less flux and solder, leading to cost savings and environmentally friendly practices.
  • Thermal Control: Delicate components can be soldered without subjecting the entire PCB to high temperatures, minimizing thermal stress.
  • Less Cleaning: Targeted soldering reduces the need for extensive post-solder cleaning, streamlining the manufacturing process.

Selective soldering is particularly useful for soldering components like:

  1. Surface-Mount Devices (SMDs): Tiny, hard-to-reach components often found in modern electronics.
  2. Through-Hole Components: Components that cannot withstand high temperatures, such as plastic connectors.
  3. Double-Sided PCBs: Soldering components on both sides of the board without affecting the opposite side.
  4. Mixed Technology PCBs: Boards with a combination of SMDs and through-hole components.

Yes, selective soldering can be used in high-volume production, especially when combined with efficient programming and automation. While individual soldering cycles may take longer than wave soldering, the precision and reduced rework contribute to overall time and cost savings. It is essential to optimize process parameters and equipment for specific production requirements.
