Sir William Crookes (1832 - 1919) investigated electrical discharges through highly evacuated "Crookes tubes" in the year 1878. These studies laid the foundation for J. J. Thomson's research in the late 1890s concerning discharge-tube phenomena and the electron.

He also discovered the element Thallium and made the radiometer.
