Detailed Solar Battery Information – Types, Price, How Solar Batteries Work and More.

Here you will find Detailed Solar Battery Information – Types, Price, How Solar Batteries Work etc.

What is Solar Battery?

Solar batteries are used to store solar energy (solar electricity) and discharge power as and when needed. Rechargeable solar batteries are used in off-grid PV systems to store excess electricity. Some solar battery banks use wet cells, while others use sealed or gel cell batteries. Each of these batteries have different temperature, mounting, and ventilation requirements.

NiMH batteries are preferred and most common when it comes to solar energy because they are better than standard NiCAD batteries in terms of charging and release cycles.

Types of Solar Battery

There are two types of Batteries:

  1. Flat Plate Battery; and
  2. Tubular Battery

Tubular batteries are taller than flat plate batteries. They are manufactured by using three main chemical compositions: lead acid, lithium ion, and saltwater. Lithium ion batteries are very successful and best option for a home solar panel system.

Types of Solar Battery

How Solar Battery Works

The home solar system generates DC electricity. This DC electricity is converter to AC electricity by using Charge Controller and Solar Inverter. The battery stores this AC electricity to be used at night or when there is no sun light.

How Solar Battery Works

Battery Backup Time

Battery backup time depends upon Ampere Hour (Ah). Higher the Ah, more will be backup time. For Example, 200 Ah battery will give backup of around 4 to 5 Hours if 400 Watt Power is Consumed. This means that we can use electrical appliances like 3-4 Led light, 2-3 ceiling fans, 1 Led TV and charge our mobile phone and laptop for 4-5 hours from the battery backup.

Battery Price

Price of solar batteries depend on its capacity (Ah) and Warranty. In India, price may range from Rs. 4,500/- to Rs. 20,000/-. Also NOTE that Tubular Batteries give better backup, last longer and offer more years of warranty.  Hence they cost more than flat plate battery. Price also depends on Brand. Some of the popular brands in India are – Exide, Luminous, Amaron, Okaya and Sukam.

Solar Battery Price List in India

Battery Capacity Average Price (Rs.)
20 Ah 4,000-5,000/-
40 Ah 5,000-6,000/-
60 Ah 7,000-8,000/-
80 Ah 9,000-10,000/-
100 Ah 11,000-12,000/-
120 Ah 13,000-14,000/-
150 Ah 14,000-16,000/-
150 Ah 17,000-19,000/-
200 Ah 19,000-20,000/-

FAQs: Solar Batteries

Solar batteries work by converting and storing the direct current (DC) electricity generated by solar panels into alternating current (AC) electricity, which is the type of electricity used in homes and businesses. This stored energy can then be used to power your electrical devices when the sun is not shining.

Solar batteries offer several benefits, including:

  1. Energy Independence: You can reduce reliance on the grid by using stored solar energy.
  2. Maximized Solar Energy Use: Excess energy isn't wasted; it's stored for later use.
  3. Power During Outages: You'll have backup power during grid outages.
  4. Reduced Energy Costs: By using stored solar energy during peak times, you can lower electricity bills.
  5. Environmental Impact: Using stored solar energy reduces reliance on fossil fuels.

When choosing a solar battery, consider:

  • Capacity: The amount of energy the battery can store.
  • Power Output: How much electricity the battery can provide at once.
  • Depth of Discharge: The percentage of stored energy that can be used before recharging.
  • Efficiency: How well the battery converts and stores energy.
  • Lifespan: The number of charge cycles the battery can endure.
  • Brand Reputation: Choose reputable manufacturers with good track records.

While it is possible to install a solar battery yourself, it's recommended to hire a professional. Proper installation involves electrical work and safety considerations. Professionals can ensure the system is installed correctly and safely, maximizing its performance and longevity.
