What is Solar Power?

Converting sunlight into electricity is called solar power. This conversion of sunlight into solar electricity can be done by using Photovoltaics (PV), or with concentrating solar power (CSP).

Here we will focus on the technology that uses Photovoltaic Cells.

Solar power can be used almost anywhere where electricity is needed. Solar power system has advanced over several years. Today we have solar power systems that are more efficient and technologically advanced. New solar energy companies are coming up. This is leading to more manufacturing of solar cells and solar panels leading to competition and drop in price and cost of solar panel installation.

Because solar power is clean, green and renewable, more and more households and businesses are using solar energy for to meet their energy requirements and save and reduce electricity bills.

How Solar Power System Works

Solar power system works by taking energy from the sun, and using solar panels. These solar panels are normally mounted on roofs of buildings to convert sun energy into usable electricity. The electricity thus collected is in the form of DC Current.

A solar inverter is used to convert DC electricity into AC (alternating current) electricity. AC electricity is then passed to an electric grid.

This conversion of DC Electricity is to AC is done by using a System called “Solar PV Balance-of-System” (BOS).

The BOS System uses some equipment to convert DC to AC. Such Equipment include:

  1. Solar Panels to Generate DC from Sunlight.
  2. An inverter to convert DC to AC.
  3. Solar Battery to Store the electricity.
  4. Few other electrical wiring accessories for installation of the system to work.

Photovoltaic cells, often referred to as solar cells or PV Cells, are devices that convert sunlight directly into electricity. They are made of semiconductor materials like silicon, which has unique properties that allow it to release electrons when exposed to sunlight. These freed electrons create an electric current that can be captured and used to power various devices.

Solar power systems primarily rely on sunlight to generate electricity. While they are less effective on cloudy days, they can still produce some electricity. However, solar power does not work during the night when the sun is not shining. To overcome this limitation, energy storage solutions like batteries can store excess energy generated during the day for use at night.

Excess solar energy can be stored or fed back into the grid. If your solar panels generate more electricity than you're using, the surplus can be stored in batteries for later use. Alternatively, in grid-connected systems, the excess energy can be fed back into the power grid, often earning you credits or payments through net metering programs, depending on your location.

Solar power offers several environmental benefits. It produces clean energy, emitting no greenhouse gases or air pollutants during operation. This helps combat climate change and reduces air pollution, improving air quality and public health. Solar power also conserves water resources compared to traditional fossil fuel-based power generation, making it a more sustainable choice for the future of our beloved planet.
