Types of Semiconductor Materials
Semiconductors material are elements that are used to manufacture Semiconductor Devices. These semi-conducting material are classified into two main types:
- Intrinsic Semiconductors: These are pure semiconductors without any added impurities. They have an equal number of free electrons and holes. The most common intrinsic semiconductors are silicon (Si) and germanium (Ge).
- Extrinsic Semiconductors: These semiconductors are formed by adding impurities (doping) to intrinsic semiconductors to improve their conductivity. Based on the type of impurity added, extrinsic semiconductors are classified into two types: (a) N-Type Semiconductors, and (b) P-Type Semiconductors.

Uses of Silicon in Electronics
Types of Semiconductor Devices
Semiconductor devices are mainly classified into two types:
- Discrete Semiconductor Devices: These are single, individual electronic components that perform specific functions in an electronic circuit. They are not integrated into a single chip but exist as individual parts. Examples – Diode, Transistor, Thyristor, Photodiode, Solar Cell.
- Integrated Circuits (ICs): They contain multiple semiconductor components like transistors, diodes, resistors, and capacitors on a single chip. They are used to perform complex tasks and are categorized based on their functionality. Examples – Analog Integrated Circuit, Digital IC, Mixed Signal IC.
